Two huge and perfect swells ushered in the beginning of big-wave season at Nazaré and the surfers put on an epic show that we won’t be forgetting in a hurry – check out the video footage right here.
Surfers like Kai Lenny, Lucas ‘Chumbo’ Chianca and Natxo Gonzalez were leaving everyone stunned as they attempted to outrun XXL bombs during the Big Wave World Tour’s Nazaré Challenge. But it turns out that they were just getting started because another huge swells was rolling in.
For days before the competition – which happened on Friday, November 16 – there were clear signs on the swell charts that another reinforcing swell would be rumbling through Nazaré 24 hours later. And this one would be even better.
While Chumbo and Natxo battled their way to the finals on Friday, that didn’t stop them from dominating on Sunday, when everyone ditched the paddle boards and strapped up for some mind-blowing tow waves. Both surfers took steps to redefine what’s possible at Nazaré, from pulling into giant barrels to boosting airs on massive end sections.
But among the men was also a familiar female charger, who scored just as many bombs as the rest of the crew. France’s Justine Dupont is no stranger at Nazaré, and she proved as much in Sunday’s big, perfect conditions.
Our man on the ground, Alex Laurel, was there to capture footage from the cliffs. From the air, we enlisted the crew from Maquina Voadora, who have made a name for themselves these last few years as Nazaré’s preeminent drone filmers. So while you’ve seen footage from Nazaré’s wild weekend, you haven’t seen it quite like this. Watch the video in the player above now.
